North West Network Greenway – Derry to Three Threes
Overview
The Inishowen Greenway is another flagship element of the North West Greenway Network. When complete, this 10.5km route will provide a safe and direct connection between Derry city and the village of Muff in Inishowen, County Donegal, extending north to Quigley’s Point. Designed as both a commuting link and a leisure route, the Greenway will serve thousands of daily users travelling between the city and Donegal’s largest peninsula. It begins at Pennyburn in Derry, following the Foyle’s western bank before crossing into Donegal.
Muff serves as a natural hub with shops, cafés and services, while Quigley’s Point offers a rural coastal setting overlooking Lough Foyle. The Greenway is fully segregated and surfaced, with a gentle gradient suitable for all ages. It is expected to deliver major benefits for active travel, sustainable tourism and cross-border connectivity. By linking urban, village and coastal landscapes, the Derry–Muff–Quigley’s Point Greenway demonstrates how infrastructure can support community wellbeing, economic growth and environmental sustainability in equal measure. It forms part of a wider vision to connect Donegal and Derry through 46.5km of linked trails, reinforcing the North West as a region of shared space and opportunity.
Derry – Muff
The first stage leaves the city at Pennyburn, travelling northwards alongside the River Foyle. The path is flat and direct, with interpretation panels explaining the city’s history and ecology. Crossing into Donegal, the route arrives in Muff, a growing village with services, shops and schools.
