Rathkeale Trailhead Officially Opens as Mayor and Minister Unveil Major Greenway Upgrade
The Rathkeale trailhead facility was officially opened today, by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer.
The Works
The works undertaken include the development of a new car park which has electric vehicle charging points, mobility spaces and a bus set down area. There has been a public realm area developed at the site that has benches, picnic tables, water point, bike repair station and bike stands. The derelict goods shed on the site has been renovated and refurbished and toilets have been provided for public use. A bike hire company have been appointed to operate from the goods shed building.
This facility strengthens the visitor offering presented by the Limerick Greenway which was officially opened in 2021 – this route runs between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale and users can opt to continue to Listowel.
The Department of Transport approximately €1.2m towards this project with the balance of the funds being provided by the Department of Rural, Community Development and the Gaeltacht as well as Limerick City and County Council.
