About the Website

For the purposes of this Strategy, a Greenway is a recreational or pedestrian corridor for non-motorised journeys, developed in an integrated manner which enhances both the environment and quality of life of the surrounding area. These routes should meet satisfactory standards of width, gradient and surface condition to ensure that they are both user-friendly and low-risk for users of all abilities. Greenways are for everyone. While they might be designed specifically to meet the needs of cyclists in terms of gradient and surface, they are used by pedestrians, wheelchair users, children in buggies as well as people on all types of bicycles. Greenways funded under this Strategy should meet the requirements of all users

There should be an understanding that many early greenways were designed before the standards were in place and so what was classed as a greenway in Ireland then may not meet the current greenway classification now (the Great Western Greenway being a good example) and that is before we even consider the NI classification.

Therefore, the line on the map should be the designated route.
